Hammock and Balcone present 2233, a new public installation by Byron Peters. 2233 engages the production of space through the closure of space; it is a parafiction that employs emptiness as substance and reactions as material. This project stands in opposition to Vancouver’s recent failures to provide adequate social housing and it presents contradictions within class, ethics, survival and time. 2233 complicates the symbolic use of benevolence and social capital as aggression by reflecting the City’s politics of representation.

Byron Peters is a Vancouver-based artist. He is currently an artist in residence at The Hammock Residency and is a member of LMPC (The Lower Mainland Painting Co.), Coupe L’état, VANACT and the music projects Amor de Cosmos, Riddley Walker, Glass Armonica and The Volunteer Ecstatic Orchestra.

Below the Line opens Thursday February 24 at 6pm at 2233 Granville Street. Please come check out the drawings! Below the Line is a drawing exhibition and fundraiser for Balcone featuring works by seven artists from across Canada, including Daniel Barrow, Derek Dunlop, Claire Greenshaw, Rebecca Donald, The Lions, Jill Southern and Ehren Salazar. Half of the proceeds from art sales will be donated to Balcone, a nonprofit that presents contemporary art projects in a variety of situations and spaces throughout Vancouver.

100-21 is a public installation about a location and its place within surrounding time. It is a composite image of 21 photographs, both analog and digital. Images are most often altered on an individual basis through movement during exposure, multiple exposures, or ripping digitally. 100-21s placement is intended to increase the net benefit from the surrounding area and its people to the current resident of this pedestrian tunnel.

CREATIVE FUNDING KEEPS LOCAL ARTISTS AFLOAT

She talks about Balcone’s recent project featuring work by Randy Grskovic. “‘There are a lot of people willing to take risks here, and if you do it correctly, it can succeed,’ says Grskovic, speaking on the heels of his latest show... On November 25, Randy Grskovic will be speaking about the artworks in his current exhibition, The Age of Info(rmation). He will place this work within the context of his artistic practice by presenting slides of older works and discussing the development of his ideas. The Age of Info(rmation) is a series of collage and diorama works that combine appropriated clippings from retro magazines with hand crafted objects.

CAMPBELL RESIGNS, A NEW AGE FOR THE CHARITABLE ARTS SECTOR IN BC?

Fitting that "The Age of Info(rmation)", an exhibition of new work by Vancouver artist Randy Grskovic, opens in Gordon Campbell’s neighborhood the day after he announces his resignation as Premier of British Columbia. Gordon Campbell was born in the Shaughnessy / South Granville neighborhood on January 12, 1948. The charitable arts sector in BC has been hit hard by funding cuts from the Provincial government over the past year.

Grskovic's exhibition is being presented by Balcone, a new charity that presents contemporary art projects in a variety of spaces around Vancouver. Without a permanent location, Balcone operates with mobile offices and flexible programs that are reactive to social, political and economic challenges within the arts community. Balcone’s mission is to create a unique context for the practice, curation and exhibition of contemporary art in Vancouver and beyond. It's mandate is to advance education by presenting artistic projects for the benefit of the community.

The Age of Info(rmation) is a series of collages made from retro magazines. Each collage tells a story that seems familiar, yet somehow different than expected. The exhibition’s title piece depicts an Eve-like 1960s era woman eating an apple while surrounded by exotic snakes from around the world. The collages prompt viewers to consider how morality in our culture differs from the morals that we have acquired through historical and mythical stories. Grskovic effectively combines old craft techniques with modern media designs meanwhile referencing history, religion, science and technology. This exhibition coincides with our pursuit for a new leader who recognizes the educational contributions of contemporary art and critical thought.

RANDY GRSKOVIC, THE AGE OF INFO(RMATION)

The Age of Info(rmation) is a series of collage and diorama works that combine appropriated clippings from retro magazines with hand crafted objects. They form postmodern allegories illustrated by a variety of fables from biblical stories, historical events and ancient myths. The composition of each work resembles that of Byzantine iconography but they are presented and framed in a modern folk fashion. The juxtaposition of images, styles and symbols from various genres and periods creates an unsettling and provocative narrative that is anachronistic with its references, yet somehow relates to the future. The exhibition’s title piece depicts an Eve-like 1960s era woman with voluminous mascara eating an apple while surrounded by exotic snakes from around the world. This body of work moralizes contemporary global issues against those of the past.

Randy Grskovic has a BFA from the University of British Columbia. His work has been exhibited at Centre A in Vancouver, The Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art in Kelowna, L’OEil de Poisson in Quebec City, Eastern Edge in St. John’s and he was invited to curate a program for VTape in Toronto. Currently, Grskovic resides in Vancouver and works out of the Cartelera Talent House.

Hammock is a collaborative art project founded and directed by Vancouver artist Heidi Nagtegaal. Projects take place in her house and other spaces in Vancouver made possible through community partnerships. NATALIE DOONAN, BORDERLANDS A MIGRATORY READING ADVENTURE

The aim of this project is to create a space for informal gatherings where ideas are shared and a sense community is built. The theme of this project, led by artist and educator Natalie Doonan, is Borderlands. In advance of each week’s meeting, the group will do a reading that will inform discussion of the art to be viewed that week.

This reading group will focus on alternative approaches for displaying, discussing and accessing contemporary art audiences outside of museums and galleries. With the recent closing of the 2010 Olympics, there is a need for discussion around appropriate use, significance and allocation of public space. Readings will explore issues surrounding art in the public sphere and creative organization on a grassroots level.

Natalie Doonan is an artist and educator currently residing in Vancouver. She received her MFA from UBC. In addition she has studied photography, painting and new media in Mexico. Over the last ten years, Natalie has exhibited photo-based work, video and animation in galleries throughout Canada, the United States, China and Mexico. Most recently, she has turned to performance work, presented live at the Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery and at Creating Resistance, a symposium hosted by UBC in conjunction with WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Natalie has worked in art institutions for over ten years, including the Blackwood Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, the Sandra Ainsley Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery and Sheridan College. She currently teaches at Emily Carr University. She is co-founder of The Miss Guides.

HEIDI NAGTEGAAL, REDIRECTING TRAFFIC

During the height of the Olympic Games in Vancouver, Heidi Nagtegaal redirected traffic using four crocheted pylons that she hand made from flagging tape. As a guerilla intervention, Nagtegaal redirected a handful of buses, an Olympic van, an ambulance (no sirens) and many cars until undercover policemen ended the performance. It lasted for approximately ten minutes.

Redirecting Traffic was recently featured in C Magazine for their piece on cultural programing in Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Nagtegaal is an artist, writer and facilitator living in Vancouver, BC. After receiving her BFA from ECUAD in 2005, Nagtegaal has gone on to found local arts initiatives such as The Hammock Residency and Headbands and Bracelets. She has recently exhibited in the Tate Modern for the No Soul For Sale: A Festival of Independents, the Western Front, Äkkigalleria, Burnaby Art Gallery, Richmond Art Gallery, CSA Space and Signal + Noise Festival.
